In Zana's wake

The trail had been cold for decades. No one had seen or even heard of Zana. World after world, you've searched for any sign of her. The tablet was half-buried in a pile of shattered stones in the Silverback's cave when it caught your eye.

An unremarkable tablet, save for the stench that clung to it like heavy moss. What it opened, no one was prepared for. Before it happened, all you can remember is blinding light from the device. You reached to remove the tablet but it was so bright. Light filled the cavern. Shadows, one by one, like candles, snuffed out. Someone had pulled you from the device and slammed you into a crevice before it happened. It was over almost as fast as it had started.

There was no explosion, no roaring flame, not even a lingering heat, just an exhalation. Like a god sighed. The masonry and stone of the cavernous shrine was silently sundered, the back halls were cut off with nothing more than a whisper. The only noise came from the trailing rubble, clattering in to it's place.

As you crawled out from behind the shattered stonework pillar, the body next to you flittered into ash and then nothing. Nothing remained of the body, of the ash. Just gone. You turned your head to find the tribe that had taken you in, fed you, defended you, cheered your return from so many worlds, was gone. Each one, a fragile moment of agony.

You have found Zana's trail.
