The most plausible surviving accounts describe the Red Queen as an extraordinarily cruel and vain ruler. Countless people were sacrificed to satisfy her quest for immortality. Grand ziggurats, luxurious temples and opulent plazas were built in her honor. She demanded unwavering loyalty, and anyone who fell short of that standard was put to death, sometimes by her personally.

You will often hear the fall of the Vaal described as a great tragedy. Is it more accurate, I wonder, to think of it as merciful release from a living nightmare?
